Oshawa (2006 population 141,590, CMA, 330,594) is a city in Ontario, just off Lake Ontario. It is in Southern Ontario approximately 60 kilometres east of Toronto. It’s viewed as the eastern end of both the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe. It is not, however, part of the GTA but has its own metropolitan area, the 14th largest in Canada. It is the largest municipality in the Regional Municipality of Durham.
The automobile industry, specifically the Canadian division of General Motors, has always been at the leaderboard of Oshawa’s economy. Founded in 1876 as the McLaughlin Carriage Company, GM Canada’s headquarters and major assembly plants are located in the city. The home of the company’s founder, Parkwood Estate, is a National Historic Site of Canada, and a backdrop favoured by numerous film crews, and has been featured in many movies.
